Benchwork beckons

Blackburn and Kinellar shedders have been busy over the past couple of weeks converting some of the metal office desks we inherited from H&R Insurance after taking over the upper floor of their office building in Blackburn Business Park for our Shed earlier this year.

This involved raising the desks to a level suitable for shedders standing for benchwork by bolting the desk feet to 100mm by 100mm (4 inch by 4 inch in old money) posts and then covering the double desktops with sheets of sturdy 18mm ply, seen here being given the first coat of varnish by some of our regulars.

Some desks will be kept at their original height so that members can indulge in more sedentary activities such as crafting, model making or appliance repairing while seated.

With the new flooring in place and benches set up in position, some donated and some purchased tools, we’re gradually getting geared up to being a fully functioning Shed.

It hasn’t all been inside work however. With the weather improving some shedders recently took the opportunity to exercise their horticultural skills by helping residents of Fechnie Brae sheltered housing in the village tidy up a weed filled garden plot so that it could be refilled with some colourful spring plants. We’ve also helped move some of their garden furniture around and assembled a newly acquired patio set so that residents can enjoy being outside in the fresh air – weather permitting.
