Shedders have been busy on the first stage of getting our workshop in H&R House into shape by laying heavy duty interlocking vinyl tiles on the existing concrete floor.
Once confirmation of funding from the National Lottery’s Awards For All Scotland programme was received, a lot of research was carried out into the best flooring option for a durable but comfortable covering which would also absorb any noise or vibration from our workshop activities and not disturb our neighbours and landlord on the ground floor.
The sturdy interlocking tiles made of recycled plastics and with a checker plate surface, seemed to fit the bill. A willing team of Shed members then rallied round, first to carry the 500 tiles from outside the building’s front entrance upstairs when delivered, then to lay the flooring over the 95 square metre area. A major task that involved moving our inherited desks and cupboards around, but which was achieved within a day and a half.
Other essential works required to meet new fire regulations involved moving some emergency lighting and signage and blocking up an interconnecting door between the workshop and meeting room come canteen. Once again, our members, with the appropriate experience and abilities, fell to the task which will now allow us to apply to Aberdeenshire Council for change of use on the premises.
Next item in the job jar is the conversion of those inherited metal desks into work benches for woodworking or crafting activities. There’s never a dull moment in a Shed!
